The attic in July

Everyone blames winter for what happens to a roof. In St. Louis, July does at least as much of the damage — from the inside. On a humid mid-summer afternoon, the air in an under-ventilated attic can run far above the temperature outside, and the shingles above it are being heated from both faces at once.

Heat from both sides

A shingle in full summer sun is already working near the top of its design range. When the attic beneath it cannot exhaust its heat, the deck stays hot through the evening, and the asphalt never gets its overnight recovery. Heat is what evaporates the oils out of asphalt; a covering over a sealed, baking attic ages measurably faster than the same product over a ventilated one — it curls earlier, gets brittle earlier, and sheds granules earlier.

Humidity adds its own chapter. St. Louis summer air carries a lot of water, and the house adds more from showers, cooking and laundry. An attic that cannot breathe holds that moisture against the underside of the deck, and damp decking is where delamination and fastener corrosion start — failures that stay invisible until a replacement crew walks the roof and feels the deck give underfoot.

The fix is a pair, not a part

Ventilation only works as a circuit: intake low at the soffits, exhaust high at the ridge, in balance. Exhaust without intake pulls conditioned air out of the house instead; intake without exhaust just parks hot air under the peak. A lot of the region’s housing — particularly the postwar ranches north and south of the city — was built with modest vents that met the standards of their day and never revisited, then had their soffit intakes painted or insulated shut over the decades.

This is why a replacement quote here should always have a ventilation line. Putting new shingles over a starved attic quietly restarts the same clock: the new covering inherits the old conditions, and the warranty on it can hinge on ventilation meeting the manufacturer’s requirements. It is the least expensive line on the quote and the one that most decides how the roof ages.
